About the Chimp Test

The Chimp Test is named after a famous 2007 study by Kyoto University primatologist Tetsuro Matsuzawa, in which a young chimpanzee named Ayumu was shown to memorize and recall the positions of numbers on a touchscreen faster and more accurately than human adults. This online version recreates that task: a grid of tiles shows a set of numbers for a brief moment, the numbers then vanish and every tile looks identical, and you have to click the tiles back in ascending order (1, 2, 3...) purely from spatial memory.

Each successful round adds one more numbered tile to the grid, so the challenge scales automatically until you make a mistake. One wrong click ends the run, and your score is the round you reached. The game loads instantly, works with mouse or touch, keeps your best round in your browser's local storage, and never sends any data to a server.

How to play the Chimp Test

Step 1
Press Start
A grid appears with a few tiles showing numbers, starting at 1. Study their positions closely.
Step 2
Watch them disappear
After a short moment every tile is masked to look identical — the numbers are gone from view, not from your memory.
Step 3
Click in order
Click the tiles that used to hold 1, 2, 3 and so on, purely from memory. Each correct click reveals that number briefly.
Step 4
Advance or retry
Finish the sequence and the next round adds one more tile. One wrong click ends the run — press Try again to restart from round 1.

Step 1
Step 2
Step 3
Step 4

Frequently asked questions

The Chimp Test is a short-term memory game based on a study by primatologist Tetsuro Matsuzawa at Kyoto University. A young chimpanzee named Ayumu was trained to remember the positions of numbers on a touchscreen, and in several trials he outperformed human adults at the same task. This online version recreates the test: numbered tiles flash briefly on a grid, then get hidden, and you click them back in ascending order from memory.
Researchers believe young chimpanzees may have a form of eidetic-like, near-photographic short-term memory that fades with age, similar to how young children sometimes show strong visual recall. Humans tend to rely more on verbal labeling and sequential rehearsal, which is slower for this kind of spatial snapshot task. It is not that chimps are smarter overall, just that this specific memory channel appears sharper in young chimps than in adult humans.
Reaching a round with 8 to 10 numbered tiles is a solid human result, and most people plateau somewhere between 5 and 9. In the original research, the chimpanzee Ayumu correctly recalled sequences of around 9 numbers flashed for under a second, which is why beating a high round count is considered genuinely impressive for a human player.
When a round starts, the numbered tiles show their digits for a short window so you can study their positions. After that window ends, every tile is replaced with a blank tile of identical appearance, so you can no longer tell which tiles held which numbers by looking. You then have to click the tiles in order from 1 upward relying entirely on your memory of where each number was.
Try grouping the tile positions into a shape or path instead of memorizing each one separately, focus on the corners and edges first since they are easier to anchor, and glance at the whole grid rather than fixating on one tile. Playing several short rounds in a row also helps, since this kind of visuospatial memory improves quickly with repeated practice even though large permanent gains are unlikely.
